India Vs West Indies 1st T20Is 2018

At Kolkata, India played against West Indies for the 1st T20 Cricket. There were lot of expectation from Virat Kohli less Indian side against the two times World Champions West Indian side. West Indies side looked very powerful with names Pollard, Brathwaite, Hope, Hetmyer and others whereas Indian side was without Virat Kohli their best batsman and the man in form and with two debutants Krunal Pandya and Khaleel Ahmed. Rohit is in formidable touch with his batting in ODIs and also looked impressive whenever he lead the side.

India won the toss and chose to field as they felt dew could play a part in the second half of the match. As soon as the match started, West Indies went in all attack mood but this approach doesn't seem to pay off as they started losing wickets in quick time.

West Indies lost their first wicket Denesh Ramdin when he tried to poke a swinging delivery outside off from Umesh Yadav and edged it to Dinesh Karthik. Immediately in the next over, a mix up cost another wicket to West Indies when Hetymer and Hope ran towards the same end and Hope was run out. Not long after the mix up, Hetymer nicked one to Dinesh Karthik of Bumrah's and went back to the pavillion quickly.

Pollard and Bravo played quietly for few overs before Pollard hit a six with such ease. When everyone was thinking its going to be a run feast after this hit, Pollard gave away his wicket to his Mumbai Indians team mate Krunal Pandya. Just after Pollard went to the pavillion, Bravo wanted to launch one out of the park, but unfortunately had found a fielder there and had to return to pavillion to find a seat next to Pollard.

In no time, Powell and Brathwaite went back to pavillion without disturbing the scorecard. Allen and Paul played few shots to up the scorecard but they couldn't help much because Khaleel and Bumrah bowled two outstanding overs at the end.

West Indies ended their innings for 109/8. Looked a very easy target to chase for Indian team. But it didn't start the way as Indians would have expected as India lost quick wickets Rohit and Dhawan within first 3 overs. Pant is expected to bat well as he was seen as replacement for Dhoni in the future. But Pant failed once again with bat by scoring just 1. Rahul a promising talent looked fluent only for a short time before he perished to a bouncer from Brathwaite. The chase looked tricky as  India were 45/4. Dinesh Karthik and Manish Pandey had plenty of time to steady the ship and which exactly they did. When India were cruising to victory, India lost Manish Pandey to a ball that stopped of the pitch and it was a simple catch to the bowler Pierre itself. Krunal came in and looked very positive. He played smartly and scored 3 boundaries in quick time and making sure India crossed the winning line quietly easily.

Lot of positives to take for India, Krunal, Khaleel, Bumrah and Kuldeep bowled exceedingly well to restrict West Indies to 109/8. Umesh also bowled well in his first three overs but was expensive in his last over. He should try to varies his pace at the end. This seems to be the only difference between Umesh and Other seamers. From batting point of my view, India has to check what has gone wrong. Atleast anyone of their top three has to hung in there and make runs.

Lot of work to do for West Indies, they have the power hitters but playing mindless cricket doesn't help any team. They should play the ball on merit rather believing only on brute force. Cannot blame West Indies bowlers as they had too little to defend at. Thomas, Brathwaite and Pierre looked excellent with the ball.

I hope the next match would bring in lot more intense cricket and hope that both teams would look at their positives and negatives and come back strongly for the next match.
